What Are Locals Saying?
You enter through the unmarked blue door… A man asks you for your identification in the dark room. Your eyesight adjusts. You’re allowed to pass through the curtains and then… the siren song of alcohol in her many forms awaits you!
There are tables for two or four, but we chose to sit at the bar. The Knee High is a spartan but cozy place – it really feels as if you’ve stumbled upon something special, something that only a few others “in the know” have discovered! Blue walls and blackout curtains, pretty wooden bar. Next order of business? Ordering up some cocktails.
The menu opens with the story behind the Knee High and its speakeasy atmosphere, which is followed up immediately by the most important element, and the reason we are all here…. THE DRINK. About two pages of their specialties are listed, and I have a sneaking suspicion you will be hard pressed to pick your poison. The Cat’s Meow (Makers Mark, Dubonnet, and Cointreau with a twist) was my favorite, a perfect balance between the whiskey, citrus and sweet flavors. Followed it up with a Knee High Gin & Ginger (Seagrams, candied ginger, bitters and soda) – which is a smokin’ deal at $5.00! B.F. tried both the Foxtrot and the Prohibition (Seagrams, Lillet Blanc, Calvados, OJ w/a twist). Off of their food menu, tried the Soft Pretzel (by Morning Star bakery) w/rarebit (cheese and beer combo – DELISH!) and the chicken pot pie. No frozen Western Family sad pie here – home made and garlicky. Mmm…
