Wonton & Co.

The second and third place winners live in our sister property The Century. Pipo, posing perfectly with his favorite toy took second place and Oscar, the sleepy puppy took third place.

With all of the adorable entries this year the judges had no choice but to award the fourth place winner as well. Enzo from the Corydon was just too cute!  While we loved seeing all the furry faces, this made picking the Judge’s Choice incredibly tough. But after much deliberation we decided we just couldn’t resist the looks we were getting from Bruno and Bacon at Stadium Place.

So it looks like the cats have it this year but our canine companions were right on their tails! Thank you to everyone who participated in Pillar Loves Pets for sharing your furry friends with us. Until next year!

Capitol Hill’s Best Grilling Tips

lyric_3Fourth of July is here! What better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a good old fashioned BBQ. Which is why we asked the experts in meats and grilling from around our Capitol Hill to share with us (and you!) everything they know so we can become experts in the art of grilling, too!

Step one: Where to get your meat

To get the best meat for grilling, skip the grocery store and go straight to the butcher. We visited the best butcher shop in our neighborhood to get an inside scoop on the best meat to grill. But what Joe Harper, an expert butcher at Rainshadow Meats shared is much more than just meat, but also how to prepare it and cook it right.

rainshadow_042011_128 rainshadow116

At Rainshadow Meats, they care where their product comes from, which is why they only choose local, small farm, 100% grass-fed meat to get the best quality. For Joe, choosing the best cuts depends on what you’re going to do with it, because there are really no bad cuts.

  • Are you making a salad? They have the perfect flat iron skirt steak for it.
  • Do you want a show stopper? Joe suggested their big, bone-in, rib eye steak.
  • Looking for something with a marinade? Joe’s go-to is a sirloin flap because it holds the marinade really well.
  • Making Kebabs? Shoulder pieces are the best for this. Top sirloin is your best option to keep some tenderness.

Joe explained sometimes the tastiest steak can be simplest to make. By sprinkling salt and pepper and cooking right you can make a mouthwatering steak with little effort. Cooking it right is the tricky part, he says you should first and foremost make the thermometer your best friend. Trying to get the perfect medium-rare steak? Cook it until it reaches 115-120 degrees Fahrenheit then take it off the grill to rest. Joe’s rule of thumb is to let it rest half the total cooking time.

Step two: Know the grilling basics

  • Turn the grill on several minutes before you want to begin grilling. You want the grill nice and hot for when you begin.oil_grill_tip5
  • Grab a paper towel and soak it in oil, grab it with tongs and rub it over the rack to avoid the meat from sticking to the grill.
  • Pat your meat dry with a paper towel before you place it on the grill to get the perfect sear.
  • Grill pans are great for giving the smoky flavor to vegetables and fruits without them falling through the rack.

Step three: Recipes

You have your meat and basic grilling tips, all you need now is a few recipes for your meat to make your BBQ perfect. Here are five of our favorites.babyback-ribs-5

  1. Bacon Bourbon BBQ Chicken Kebabs
  2. Beer Marinated Grilled Steak
  3. Grilled Cilantro Lime BBQ Wings
  4. Grilled Veggies: Zucchini, Carrot, Mushroom and Peppers
  5. Chipotle Baby Back Ribs

Rainbow Love – Seattle Pride Festival

This years’ pride weekend in Seattle seems to have been one of the biggest, most festive and colorful we’ve had. There’s nothing as special as seeing everyone in our neighborhood, city, and even the entire state come together for such an awesome celebration!

It all started in our neighborhood with Mayor Murray’s unveiling of our awesome, eye-catching rainbow sidewalks! In case you didn’t hear, it even received National attention. Because Capitol Hill rocks!

We joined the celebration, too! Our team was part of the festivities at the Pride Fest in Capitol Hill on Saturday. We went all out with tutus, rainbow-colored everything and fun giveaways. That’s The Lyric way! Or should we say, that’s #LyricLiving? Either way it’s fun.

Our favorite part was to be able to hang out with our neighbors, friends, attendees, and even our residents stopped by to spin the wheel and get some cool prizes.

Did you see us at Pride Fest? Got some cool pictures from the festival? Share them with us! We’d love to see how you showed your pride this past weekend.

Pillar Loves Pets: Celebrating All Pets

June is Pillar Loves Pets Month! This is our time to celebrate the furry friends who make life so much better and we want you and your pet to join us!  We love pets of all shapes and sizes and The Lyric features some swell pet amenities too.  We have some seriously cute pets living at our building and this is the month for them to shine.  And maybe win you some cash!

We kicked off the month by supporting the Seattle Animal Shelter Furry 5k at Seward Park.  The place was jumping with dogs (and their owners) and it was so much fun to watch the action from our booth while we handed out some doggie treats. It was really great to see some of our residents drop by to say hello too!

The Furry 5k raises funds for the shelter, which takes in approximately 6,000 stray and owner-surrendered animals each year. Since so many of these animals are in need of significant care, they created the Help the Animals Fund in 1977, and all proceeds from the Furry 5K help fund their mission.  By the way, if you missed the walk, but want to support the Help the Animals Fund, you still can by visiting this online donation form.

To further treat the adorable pets at The Lyric we hosted a Yappy Hour for our residents and all pets were invited! We headed up to the rooftop on a beautiful sunny afternoon to enjoy the view, and a relaxing time with our neighbors and their pets. We were in cuteness overload all afternoon as we sipped on some wine and had a few snacks. The puppies had some treats too when they were not busy mingling with other friendly pets.

Next up for us is the 3rd Annual Pillar Loves Pets Photo Contest! We are searching for the cutest, funniest, best pet photo in town. You can enter your four-legged friend into our tail to tail contest against other furry competitors!  What are you waiting for? Submit a picture of your pet doing something silly, funny, ridiculous or incredibly adorable for a chance to win! From now until June 26 we’ll be collecting the best pet photos. Then, invite your friends to vote from June 27 to July 10 on their favorite submissions! Be sure to follow us on Facebook to qualify to enter the contest.  Winners will receive $150 and $50 gift cards, so tell your pet to get posing!  Submit your photo here until June 26.p loves pets

Good luck!

Meet Our Team: Sidneigh Barks

We’re not usually ones to brag, but we think the people who work at The Lyric are pretty awesome. They make The Lyric the special place it is, and make sure our residents are happy. That’s why we’ve just got to share them with you!

We will be showcasing, one by one, our team members in our Meet Our Team posts. We will be asking them irreverent and thought provoking questions so you can get a chance to know them on a more personal level.Sidneigh 3

For our first Meet Our Team post, we present to you Sidneigh Barks, the newest member here at The Lyric. Sidneigh joined our team as a leasing consultant at the end of last year, and she quickly fit right in. She has been a great support and asset to our team and she has shown her incredible skills and commitment to providing a Quietly Awesome experience for our residents. For those of you who have not had the pleasure to meet her, Sidneigh is very charismatic, fun and friendly!

We asked her a fun, goofy question—check out what she told us.

Our question: If you could fly anywhere, where would you go first and why?

Her answer: Ireland.

Sidneigh’s family came from Ireland many years ago. While she has not been able to trace back exactly when her family came to the U.S., she knows that it was sometime before her great grandparents. Both sides of her family came from Ireland and settled in the mid-west—what are the odds!

Because of this, Sidneigh would love to fly straight to Ireland and see the gorgeous scenery. Once she’s there, she’d love to get immersed in the culture and explore her family roots. She wants to discover the cuisine, culture, traditions and everyday life in Ireland to experience what it must’ve been like for them. And of course, she would not miss checking out the Guinness Factory while she was there!

How about you? We would love to hear where YOU would like to go if you could fly. Please share in the comments below, and let us know if there are any questions you’d like to ask our team!

Pillar Properties Named Tops in the Nation for Resident Satisfaction!

Our teams are constantly focused on customer service at Pillar Properties.  Its the cornerstone of our mission – to provide what we call a ‘quietly awesome’ experience for our residents.  That means our teams work diligently behind the scenes to make sure the experience inside our properties matches residents lifestyles, needs and expectations.  Being quietly awesome is a focus for everything we do and it is the guiding light of our customer service team.

That’s why we are especially proud to receive the SatisFacts 2014 National Resident Satisfaction Award for 2014.  SatisFacts is a national company that works with more than a million apartment dwellers annually to gauge their experiences.  We are thrilled that of the nearly 300 property management companies across the country, Pillar Properties is ranked in the top three!*

“Seeing Pillar Properties recognized with this award is exceptional but I can humbly say I am not surprised,” said Billy Pettit, senior vice president for Pillar Properties.  “This all comes back to the teams at each of our properties – The Lyric, The Wave and The Nolo at Stadium Place, The Century, The Corydon and The 101.  They are deeply committed to making our properties a special place to live and they are clearly succeeding.”

SatisFacts surveys all residents annually and again anytime a resident moves in, has a maintenance request or moves out. Based on those surveys, Pillar Properties also received an Exceptional Company Award (score of 4.5 or higher of 5.0) for resident satisfaction.  You can see the awards and rankings here.

“This awards shows us that our teams are responding to our resident’s needs and that’s what truly matters to us. We focus every day on ensuring that our property teams are quick to address any issues that arise for our residents.  That’s what makes Pillar Properties different from other property owners and that’s what being quietly awesome is all about,” said Pettit.

SatisFacts is the apartment industry retention and reputation management authority, working with hundreds of management companies and more than a million apartment units nationally.  You can learn more about the company here.
